The Heart Sellers Opens at Penguin Rep Theatre This July

Penguin Rep Theatre will transport audiences back to 1973 with its upcoming production of The Heart Sellers, a new play by acclaimed playwright Lloyd Suh.

Running from July 9 through July 26, the production is directed by Maria Mileaf and offers a heartfelt and humorous look at friendship, belonging, and the immigrant experience in America.

Set against the backdrop of a rapidly changing nation—where Soul Train dominated television screens, the Watergate scandal filled headlines, and Disney World was still a new attraction—The Heart Sellers follows two young immigrant women who meet by chance at a supermarket just before Thanksgiving.

While their husbands work long hours as medical residents, the women spend the holiday together, sharing stories about their new lives in America and attempting to prepare a frozen turkey for the first time. As the evening unfolds, the pair forge an unexpected friendship while navigating the challenges of building a new home far from their families and familiar traditions.

Described by Broadway World as a “laugh-aloud love letter to friendship,” the play blends humor and heart to explore themes of connection, identity, and the pursuit of the American dream.

Lloyd Suh, one of the country’s most celebrated contemporary playwrights, is known for crafting stories that examine the immigrant experience with warmth, insight, and authenticity. Under the direction of Maria Mileaf, The Heart Sellers promises to deliver a moving and entertaining theatrical experience for Hudson Valley audiences.

Performances will take place at Penguin Rep Theatre in Stony Point throughout July.

For theatergoers seeking a thoughtful comedy filled with humor, nostalgia, and emotional resonance, The Heart Sellers offers a timely reminder of the power of friendship and the meaning of home.
