Hezekiah Easter The First Black American To Be Elected Into Rockland County Legislature

Hezekiah Easter, was inducted into the Rockland County Civil Rights Hall of Fame in 2003.  In his career and in the history of Rockland, Hezekiah Easter was often the first. He became the first Black person elected to public office in Rockland County 1965 when he won a seat on the Village of Nyack Board of Trustees. Easter served as deputy mayor and police commissioner in the village. In November 1969, he was elected as an inaugural member of the Rockland County Legislature.

Easter, a Nyack community leader ensured the preservation and restoration of a historic Black Cemetery (Mt. Moor Cemetery is currently surrounded by the Palisades Mall) and worked on behalf of social justice issues, including affordable housing and an integrated workforce.

Haverstraw Police Officers Inspire Students at Haverstraw Elementary Career Day

It was a special day at Haverstraw Elementary School as Police Officers Danny Delacruz and Alays Aquino joined the students for career day! They shared stories and gave the kids a real glimpse into what it’s like to be a police officer.
Officer Delacruz talked about the importance of helping people and keeping our community safe. Officer Aquino added to the excitement by sharing that in addition to being a police officer, he also volunteers with local ambulance corps and fire departments.
It’s always great when we get to connect with the students at North Rockland Central School District. A big thank you to the school district for inviting us to be part of career day! We loved spending time with the kids and hope we sparked an interest in serving the community.

Students Explore the Role of a Public Information Officer at Haverstraw Elementary Career Day

RCDAO Public Information Officer Scott Waters had the opportunity to attend Career Day at Haverstraw Elementary School. Students learned about the important role of a Public Information Officer (PIO) and how we communicate news to the public and media.

The students participated in an interactive mock press conference, taking on various roles such as elected officials, journalists, photographers, and videographers. Afterward, students go to take photos with various cameras from new to old and to explore a collection of cameras, ranging from modern models to older ones, giving them a unique perspective on how media and communication have evolved.
