Ramapo SROs Partner with Students to Highlight the Dangers of Impaired Driving

Published

on

As Memorial Day weekend and prom/graduation season approach, our SROs are working proactively to help students understand the real-life consequences of dangerous driving decisions.

Using Fatal Vision Goggles, students got a powerful, hands-on experience showing how alcohol and drug impairment can affect vision, balance, and reaction time—all without ever getting behind the wheel. The experience served as a vivid reminder that just one poor decision can lead to life-altering consequences.

We’re incredibly proud of our students for taking this lesson seriously and grateful to our SROs for their ongoing dedication to keeping our community safe.

Let’s all do our part to ensure this season is remembered for the right reasons. Stay safe and drive responsibly!

Published

The Town of Haverstraw Police Department is investigating a fight outside the ShopRite in Garnerville that resulted in an accidental gun discharge Sunday evening.

Police said officers responded to reports of a fight in progress at approximately 7:45 p.m. on May 24, 2026, in the parking lot of the ShopRite located at 56 West Ramapo Road.

Upon arrival, officers encountered two adult men on the Rosman Road side of the building. Both individuals sustained minor, non-life-threatening injuries during the altercation and were transported to local hospitals for evaluation. Authorities said both men were treated and later released.

According to the preliminary investigation, one of the men involved was an off-duty member of the New York City Police Department who was carrying a legally owned handgun at the time of the incident.

Police said that during the confrontation, the firearm was removed from the officer’s waistband, causing one round to discharge. The bullet did not strike either of the individuals involved or any bystanders.

Investigators also determined the dispute may have stemmed from allegations that the other man involved had been harassing the NYPD officer’s daughter. Authorities emphasized that the daughter and the other individual are acquaintances only and have never been involved in a domestic relationship.

The Town of Haverstraw Police Department said the investigation remains ongoing in coordination with the Rockland County District Attorney’s Office.

Anyone with information related to the incident is asked to contact the Town of Haverstraw Police Department Detective Bureau at (845) 354-1500.
