Rockland Residents Urged to Donate Blood as Regional Supply Faces Ongoing Need

With only about 2% of eligible New Yorkers donating blood, maintaining an adequate blood supply remains an ongoing challenge for hospitals in Rockland County, the Hudson Valley and across the state.

Unlike many medical treatments, blood cannot be manufactured, and because blood products have a limited shelf life, the need for donors never ends. Red blood cells can be stored for about 42 days, while platelets remain usable for only five to seven days, requiring a constant supply of new donations to meet patient needs.

Blood transfusions play a critical role in treating trauma victims, surgical patients, cancer patients and others facing life-threatening medical emergencies. According to the New York Blood Center, a single blood donation can help save up to three lives.

To help strengthen the regional blood supply, Rockland Paramedic Services is partnering with the New York Blood Center to host a community blood drive on Wednesday, Aug. 6, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at RPS headquarters in New City as part of NYBC’s “Blood for a Brew” campaign.

As first responders, paramedics witness firsthand the importance of having blood readily available before an emergency occurs. Organizers say the event is intended to raise awareness of the region’s ongoing need for blood donors while encouraging eligible residents to make a donation that could benefit patients throughout the Hudson Valley.

Officials emphasize that maintaining a strong local and regional blood supply depends on regular donors. Because blood products expire quickly and demand remains constant, every donation helps ensure hospitals have lifesaving blood available when it is needed most.

Residents who are eligible to donate are encouraged to participate in the Aug. 6 blood drive and help support hospitals and patients across the region.

Truck Overturns on NYS Thruway Near Tappan Zee Bridge, Causing Delays

A traffic incident is causing significant delays on the southbound New York State Thruway near mile marker 16.4, just before the Tappan Zee Bridge.

According to an initial traffic alert, a large truck struck an overpass and overturned across several lanes of the highway. Only the two left lanes are currently getting by.

The incident occurred at approximately 12:15 p.m. and remains ongoing.

Motorists traveling southbound toward Westchester should expect significant delays and consider seeking an alternate route if possible.

Drivers in the area are urged to slow down, use caution and follow directions from emergency personnel.

Italy Named World’s Top Olive Oil Producer at 2026 NYIOOC

Italy has been named the world’s leading olive oil-producing country at the 2026 NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition, earning 166 awards, more than any other country represented in the competition.

Producers from 29 countries submitted a total of 1,021 olive oils for blind judging. Judges awarded 464 Gold Awards and 234 Silver Awards across the competition.

Italy’s strong showing comes despite a challenging season for olive growers. Extreme weather conditions and rising production costs have placed additional pressure on producers throughout the country.

From the rolling hills of Tuscany and Umbria to the olive-growing regions of Puglia and Sicily, Italian producers continue to showcase the country’s long-standing tradition of olive oil craftsmanship.

The results highlight the diversity and consistency of Italian extra virgin olive oil, with producers from across the country earning recognition on the international stage.

For many Italian households and food lovers around the world, extra virgin olive oil remains a kitchen staple — used for everything from dipping and dressing to cooking and finishing traditional dishes.
