Ramapo Police Share Safety Tips Following Summer Bear Sightings

Published

on

As warmer weather continues, the Town of Ramapo Police Department is reminding residents that black bear sightings are possible and urging the public to keep a safe distance if they encounter one.

Bears are more active during the warmer months as they search for food and water. While seeing a bear can be surprising, officials stress that the animals are typically not aggressive if left alone.

If you encounter a bear, the Ramapo Police Department recommends:

  • Give the bear plenty of space.
  • Do not approach the animal or attempt to take photos or selfies.
  • Do not chase the bear or try to scare it away.
  • If the bear poses an immediate threat to people or public safety, call 911.

Residents are also encouraged to secure garbage, remove outdoor food sources, and keep pets under control to help reduce unwanted encounters with wildlife.

As temperatures rise, police remind everyone to stay hydrated, stay aware of their surroundings, and remember that people aren’t the only ones seeking relief from the summer heat.
