Women’s History Month Spotlight: Geralyn Lucas, A Rockland Native Inspiring Women Nationwide

Published

on

ROCKLAND COUNTY, N.Y. — As communities across the country recognize Women’s History Month, Rockland County is shining a spotlight on one of its own: author, television producer, and women’s health advocate Geralyn Lucas.

Born and raised in Rockland County, Lucas has become a nationally recognized voice for breast cancer awareness and survivorship. Her work has helped thousands of women navigate one of the most difficult experiences of their lives with courage, humor, and resilience.

From Rockland Roots to National Media

Lucas grew up in Rockland County before going on to attend college and build a successful career in television journalism. She later worked as a producer for major broadcast networks, including ABC News, where she helped produce national news programming.

Her career was on the rise when, at just 27 years old, Lucas received life-changing news — she had been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Turning Personal Struggle Into Inspiration

Rather than retreat from the public eye, Lucas chose to share her experience openly. Her candid and empowering memoir, Why I Wore Lipstick to My Mastectomy, chronicled her journey through diagnosis, treatment, and recovery.

The book quickly resonated with readers across the country for its honest and often humorous perspective on cancer, body image, and survival. It later inspired a television film adaptation and helped establish Lucas as a leading advocate for women facing breast cancer.

A Voice for Women’s Health

In the years since her diagnosis, Lucas has become a prominent speaker and advocate for early detection, survivorship, and emotional support for women dealing with cancer.

She has appeared on national television programs and worked with cancer organizations to encourage women to speak openly about their health and support one another during treatment and recovery.

Rockland’s Influence

Though her message now reaches a national audience, Lucas’s story began in Rockland County — a community that helped shape the determination and resilience that define her work today.

During Women’s History Month, her journey stands as a powerful reminder that extraordinary influence can grow from local roots. From Rockland to television studios and bookshelves across the country, Geralyn Lucas has used her voice to empower women facing some of life’s most difficult challenges.

As communities honor women who have made a lasting impact, Lucas remains an example of how courage, honesty, and advocacy can turn personal adversity into a message of hope for others.

Rockland County Shelter’s Longest Resident Still Waiting for a Forever Home

Published

ROCKLAND COUNTY, NY — At more than eight years old, Cookie has spent the last four years at a local shelter, making her the longest resident currently waiting for adoption.

Despite the long wait, Cookie remains a friendly, affectionate dog who continues to win over staff and volunteers with her loving personality. She enjoys spending time with people, whether it’s going for car rides, exploring the outdoors, or simply relaxing with a good cuddle. She’s also known for her playful, goofy nature and her love of attention—especially when it comes to back scratches.

Described as a “smart cookie,” she knows her basic commands and walks well on a leash. She has even shown a love for adventure, including activities like kayaking.

Cookie would do best in a home where she can be the only pet, allowing her to soak up all the attention. An experienced dog owner, a household with older children, and access to a fenced-in yard would provide an ideal environment for her to thrive.

Shelter staff say Cookie’s story is a reminder of the many animals waiting for homes and the importance of adoption. After years of waiting, they hope her next chapter will finally be with a family of her own.

Those interested in adopting Cookie or learning more can contact Four Legs Good NY NJ for more information. 🐾
