BREAKING: Suspect in Hillcrest Shooting Takes Own Life During Traffic Stop in Connecticut

HILLCREST, NY – At 8:56am, the Ramapo Police Department responded to Inwood Drive in the Hillcrest area of the Town for the report of gunshots fired and a female laying on the ground. Upon officer arrival, the female was found to be unresponsive and had suffered multiple gunshot wounds. The 56-year-old victim was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital by Spring Hill Volunteer Ambulance Corps where she was pronounced deceased.

The Ramapo Police Investigations Division commenced an investigation and determined that the suspect, Lawrence Byrd, a 53-year-old male had fled to Connecticut. The suspect was located with the assistance of the Stamford Police Department. The suspect did take his own life.

The investigation is still ongoing and no further information will be released at this time; however, this was an isolated incident and there is no threat to the general public.
The Ramapo Police Department was assisted by the Rockland County Sheriff’s Office, the Rockland County District Attorney’s Office, New York State Police, Norwalk Police Department, Stamford Police Department, and the Rockland County Intel Center.

RPD Is Asking Residents To Please Be Aware Of A New Email Scam

Residents, please be aware of a new email scam targeting our community. Scammers are sending emails claiming that they’ve hacked into your computer and recorded you watching illicit content. They threaten to release this fake video to your family and contacts unless you pay $2,000 in Bitcoin.
To make the scam more convincing, the email may include a Google Earth image of your home and a QR code for the payment. One of our residents noticed inconsistencies in the message and did not fall for the scam.
Stay vigilant! If you receive an email like this, do not panic, do not send money, and report it immediately to local law enforcement. Additionally, report the scam to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov. Scammers are getting more sophisticated, but with awareness, we can protect each other.

Rockland County District Attorney Execute Search Warrant At Village Of Haverstraw Smoke Shop

The Rockland County District Attorney’s Office; the New York Field Office of Homeland Security Investigations; Town of Haverstraw Police Department, and New York State agencies executed a search warrant at a smoke shop at 48 Broadway in the Village of Haverstraw following a multi-agency investigation after receiving complaints from the public.
District Attorney Tom Walsh said, “Working with our partners on the federal, state, and local level we executed a search warrant at a smoke shop in the Village of Haverstraw. Today’s action sends a clear message that all business in Rockland must be conducted lawfully.”
The following agencies were involved with the investigation: Rockland County District Attorney’s Office, Homeland Security Investigations, New York State Tax and Finance, New York State Office of Cannabis Management, and the Town of Haverstraw Police Department.
This is an ongoing investigation, and more information will be released at a future time.
It should be noted that a criminal complaint is merely an accusation, and that a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
