On Friday, February 12 at approximately 10:30pm the Piermont Fire Department along with the Nyack Fire Department responded 510 Piermont Ave for a report of smoke in the building.

Within 2 minutes of the initial dispatch 13-1 (Chief Goswick Jr) and Piermont Police Department (Det. Peter Boutros) entered the building to assess the situation.

Once within the building they located a heavy smoke condition on the top floor of the apartment complex with a confirmed fire in one of the units. During the evacuation process 13-Command advised control of a signal 12 (working fire) with a report of Party’s still trapped on the top floor.
Our first due engine with a crew of (6) hit the hydrant on the corner of Ash & Piermont Ave and stretched a 1-3/4 line to the fire floor. The first due truck set up the ladder on the roof and the crew began to conduct an interior search as well as opening up while the engine crew extinguished the fire.
10-F.A.S.T. (Nyack FD) was advised that they would be going to work assisting in truck company operations once on scene. 13-Command then requested a additional F.A.S.T. from the Sparkill Fire Department to the scene to replace Nyack.

Within 5 minutes of the initial dispatch the crew of our first due engine and truck had water on the fire and searches underway.

Once the scene was placed under control members of the Piermont, Sparkill and Nyack Fire Departments, assisted the landlord in moving all the clothing and jewelry from the storefront that become exposed to the water run off from the fire. After the members moved the merchandise to a safe location they covered all the items with tarps to prevent further damage.
All building tenants were safe and accounted for during the fire operations. The American Red Cross was called to the scene to assist the displaced tenants from all 4 apartments that were damaged.

Congratulations to Todd Reinertsen and Scott Nava working Medic 1 for a great job this morning saving 5 adults and 4 children with carbon monoxide poisoning. Medic 1 responded to a residence in Garnerville for a woman complaining of headache and nausea. While assessing the woman, the portable carbon monoxide detectors carried by our paramedics for many years began alerting to high levels of CO in the house. Todd and Scott quickly evacuated the house and determined that all residents were feeling sick with headaches and nausea. Their quick action saved lives today.
All 9 family members were transported to Montefiore Nyack with two ambulances from Haverstraw Ambulance Corps, Inc. and one from Congers-Valley Cottage Volunteer Ambulance Corps. for evaluation and treatment. In addition SW Johnson Fire Department (Department 23) responded and confirmed carbon monoxide was present in the house. Great teamwork everyone!
