WEST NYACK, NY — On Monday, July 14, at 11 a.m., State Senator Bill Weber, Assemblymember Patrick Carroll, the family of Dariel Rivera, and members of Families for Safe Streets will gather at the crash site where 18-year-old Dariel was struck and killed by a speeding driver while riding his scooter to work at FedEx in the early hours of the morning.
The vigil marks the second anniversary of Dariel’s death. In his memory, the family will erect a ghost scooter at the site on 170 NY-Route 303 in West Nyack.
Advocates will use this solemn occasion to call for the New York State Assembly to act on stalled traffic safety legislation — including the Stop Super Speeders Bill (S4045/A2299), which passed the State Senate in 2025 and would require speed limiters for repeat speeding offenders. Another bill, Defined Safe Passing (S1724A/A4346A), would mandate a minimum three-foot distance when drivers pass bicyclists, pedestrians, and wheelchair users — but it also remains stalled in the legislature.
