Many Of Our Neighbors May Not Be Able To Afford A Winter Coat This Season

“Through no fault of their own, many of our neighbors find themselves unable to afford to buy a warm coat or winter clothing,” Legislator Paul said. “This effort is an opportunity for all of us to come together to show our struggling neighbors that we care about them and that they are not alone.”

Coats and warm clothing for children and adults are being accepted until Dec. 2. New items are preferred but very-gently-used coats and clothing will be accepted. Drop off donations between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays at the Legislature’s Office in the Allison-Parris County Office Building, 11 New Hempstead Road in New City. TOUCH (Together Our Unity Can Heal) is a community-based public health organization that provides compassionate and effective services to our neighbors in the Hudson Valley. TOUCH has been a Ryan White AIDS Service Organization for more than 30 years. The organization’s work leads to healthier individuals and stronger communities.

UPDATE: Brush Fire At Rockland Lake

George Hoehmann, Town Supervisor Clarkstown has provided an update as of 11:45AM, Sunday November 17th on the brush fire in Rockland Lake State Park along the Hudson River. Numerous fire departments are on scene including Rockland Lake, Congers Fire Department, Valley Cottage Fire Department 22, Nyack, Piermont Fire Department as well as the Clarkstown Police Department battling the blaze. The location of the fire is difficult to access water is being supplied by fireboats from the river and I am informed that the fire is being contained. The photo from the police drone unit demonstrate the area affected. We will post updates as the situation evolves.

Rockland County Under Drought Watch

Department of Health has been monitoring water usage in the county which has been relatively low; however, water conservation is encouraged to preserve our drinking water resources and keep water available for fighting fires.

“Back in 2022 when this County was faced with a water emergency, the people of Rockland stepped up to do the right thing and cut back water usage 15 percent below average,” said County Executive Ed Day. “I am once again asking our residents to do their part and reduce water usage until we surpass this drought.”

“Dry periods like we are currently experiencing can have a significant impact on our water resources when they occur in the spring and summer months, but we still have time to recover when they occur in the fall. However, we cannot predict if we are at the beginning of an extended dry spell or if rainfall will normalize when we need it to,” said Sam Rulli, Director of Environmental Health.

To help conserve water, residents can: Check toilets, faucets, and pipes for leaks to prevent water waste; fix these leaks as soon as possible. Take shorter showers – this can help reduce our water demand.

In addition, observe the Executive Order Burn Ban issued on 11/1/2024 which prohibits all outdoor burning activities, including but not limited to the burning of brush, leaves, and other yard debris, along with fire pits and campfires, are all restricted until further notice. This decision is in response to abnormally dry conditions that pose a significant risk for fires to ignite and spread quickly due to the recent lack of rainfall, low humidity, and gusty winds.
