Martin Luther King III Delivers A Special Speech About Unity In Rockland

Published

on

My administration continues to be humbled by what can only be described as an
incredibly remarkable moment in Rockland’s history, when Martin Luther King III visited
our County, said County Executive, Ed Day.

American human rights activist, philanthropist and advocate, and oldest son of civil
rights leaders Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, came to Rockland thanks
to our Commissioner Spencer Chiimbwe who facilitated the visit which included Martin
Luther King III delivering a special speech about unity to nearly 200 guests attending
our County Human and Civil Rights Hall of Fame Induction ceremony event.

I would like to recount some of the message Martin Luther King III shared at our event
which included in part, “My parents taught me that great leadership is about bringing
people together, not tearing them apart.” Martin Luther King III went on to say, “Great
leaders build bridges, bridges of hope and opportunity. They build bridges of
understanding, cooperation, and goodwill.”

Rockland Health Department Issues Hudson River Recreation Update

Published

on

The Rockland County Department of Health is advising residents that the Yonkers Wastewater Recovery Facility has been fully operational since July 3, while reminding the public to follow state health guidance when recreating on the Hudson River this holiday weekend.

According to the department, the New York State Department of Health and the Department of Environmental Conservation have been coordinating with Rockland and Westchester counties, New York City, and other partner agencies following the wastewater system disruption.

Health officials said residents should not drink untreated Hudson River water under any circumstances. They also advise against swimming or participating in activities that involve full-body immersion at beaches that remain closed.

However, officials said recreational activities involving partial contact with the water—including boating, kayaking, and fishing—are considered safe. Anglers are encouraged to review New York State Department of Health fish consumption advisories before eating their catch.

The Rockland County Department of Health said it will continue working with state and local agencies to monitor conditions.

Rockland County Reflects on Revolutionary War History This Independence Day

Published

on

This year’s Independence Day carries special meaning as our nation prepares to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026.

As we approach this historic milestone, Rockland County has produced an incredible four-part Rev250 series that explores our community’s Revolutionary War history. From one of the greatest acts of treason in American history to the Storming of Stony Point, the events that unfolded in our own backyard read like a spy novel. Applause to the Economic Development & Tourism Department for creating this outstanding snapshot of Rockland’s rich history.

We encourage everyone to watch the four-part series on the Rockland County YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/@RocklandGov.

The Fourth of July marks the moment our Founding Fathers boldly proclaimed a new nation, setting in motion a story of courage, sacrifice, and resilience.

As we honor 250 years of American independence, we are reminded that these ideals have endured because countless patriots have stood ready to defend them.

For too many who return home, however, especially our older veterans, navigating the VA system can be overwhelming. In Rockland County, we are committed to ensuring that no veteran has to face those challenges alone.

Our Veterans Service Agency (VSA) continues to provide critical support to the more than 9,000 veterans who call Rockland County home.

The VSA offers benefits counseling, claims preparation and follow-up, appeals assistance, employment resources, and guidance on navigating the VA healthcare system, including information about available Urgent Care and Community Care providers. These services help ensure our veterans receive the care, benefits, and support they have earned through their service.

As we commemorate this Independence Day and look ahead to America’s 250th anniversary, let us renew our commitment to those who have safeguarded our freedoms for nearly two and a half centuries.

If you or someone you know is a veteran in need of assistance, please reach out. Visit RocklandCountyNY.gov or call (845) 638-5244 to connect with our Veterans Service Agency.
