Ramapo Police Share Guidance Following Coyote Sightings

Published

on

Ramapo, NY — The Ramapo Police Department has received multiple reports of coyote sightings throughout the town. In light of recent coyote-related incidents in nearby Bergen County, the department is sharing official guidance from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to help residents stay informed and safe.

While the department notes that it is not a wildlife agency, it emphasizes the importance of relying on accurate, expert information. Coyotes are a natural part of New York’s ecosystem and typically avoid human contact. However, those that become accustomed to people may pose risks—particularly to small pets and children.

Residents are encouraged to review the DEC’s recommendations on preventing coyote conflicts, making properties less attractive to wildlife, and responding safely to encounters.

The department announced that officers are participating in No-Shave November, an annual campaign that raises awareness and funds for cancer-related causes.

With approval from Town Supervisor Howard Phillips, the Town Board and the Chief of Police, participating officers will be putting down their razors for the month while supporting the charitable initiative.

Each participating officer will also make a personal donation to help support the effort.

The department encourages residents not to be surprised if they see officers sporting some extra facial hair throughout November, noting that it’s not a change in grooming standards but rather a way to show support for an important cause.
