Rockland County District Attorney Walsh Warns Public About COVID-19 Scams

Published

on

NEW CITY, NY – Rockland County District Attorney Tom Walsh advises county residents to be aware that scammers are exploiting public concern relating to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. He also warns business owners to not price gouge! If you are caught inflating prices, to increase your profit on the backs of customers, you will be prosecuted.

The District Attorney and the Rockland County Consumer Protection are working together to ensure that residents don’t become victims of price gouging. If you know of a business gouging victims, please contact the Department of Consumer Protection at 845-364-3901.

Here are some examples of scams:

• Fake websites selling unproven treatments, prevention measures, and vaccines, or that sell cleaning and disinfecting products at exorbitant prices

• Calls, text messages, emails and social media posts offering vaccinations, or to entice the public to buy bogus products or virus test kits

• Phony efforts to collect donations for victims and hard-hit areas around the globe.

• Avoid buying test kits online: the FDA advises that testing for the virus is currently being conducted in verified state and local public laboratories.

• Shop wisely online at websites of trusted sellers, and compare prices before buying.
