Don’t Miss the 2025 Perseid Meteor Shower and Sturgeon Moon: Peak Viewing Tips and Best Dark Sky Locations Near NYC

Published

on

August’s Full Sturgeon Moon will reach its peak illumination at 3:55 a.m. Eastern Time on August 9, 2025, and it perfectly aligns with the Perseid meteor shower, which is one of the most active and visually stunning meteor showers of the year.

Here’s what to know:

🌕 Sturgeon Moon

  • The name comes from Native American traditions, marking the time when sturgeon were most readily caught in the Great Lakes.

  • It’s the full moon of August, and in 2025, it peaks early in the morning of August 9.

☄️ Perseid Meteor Shower

  • Peaks around August 11–13, but meteors are visible several days before and after.

  • Known for bright, fast meteors, often leaving long trails.

  • Can produce 50–100 meteors per hour under dark skies.

🔭 Viewing Tips

  • Best time to watch the Perseids: After midnight to pre-dawn hours (closer to moonset).

  • The moon’s brightness might interfere slightly with viewing fainter meteors, but the Perseids are bright enough that many will still be visible.

  • Try to get away from city lights, and give your eyes about 20–30 minutes to adjust to the dark.

  • No telescope needed—just lie back and look up!

    Summary Table

    Location Access & Viewing Perks
Minnewaska State Park Dark‑sky preserve, high elevation, superb horizons
Lake Taghkanic SP Open lake views, minimal light pollution
Taconic SP (Copake Falls) Rural and dark, ideal for large‐sky meteor watching sessions
Mohonk Preserve pull‑offs Elevated outlooks with wide northern sky exposure
