Fall Safety Alert: Why Drivers Should Avoid Leaf Piles on the Road

Published

on

As autumn colors sweep through the region and leaves begin to blanket neighborhoods, community safety officials are reminding residents that leaf piles—while a familiar seasonal sight—can pose hidden dangers for both drivers and children.

Authorities warn that motorists should never drive through leaf piles along the roadway. Children often play or hide in them, making them nearly impossible to see from inside a vehicle. In addition, wet leaves can reduce traction, creating slippery conditions that increase stopping distance. Leaf piles can also conceal hazards such as potholes, curbs, or debris, which can damage vehicles or lead to accidents.

Officials also stress caution when parking on residential streets. Dry leaf piles can ignite if exposed to a vehicle’s hot exhaust system, potentially causing car fires and property damage. Drivers are urged to keep a safe distance from leaf piles when parking.

As the community embraces the fall season, safety teams hope these reminders will help prevent unnecessary injuries and accidents. “A little awareness goes a long way,” the statement reads. “Together, we can keep families and children safe while enjoying everything autumn has to offer.”

Cookie is still waiting… and she’s holding onto hope that somewhere in Rockland County, her forever family is looking for her too.

Day after day, this beautiful sweet girl watches people come and go, hoping that maybe today will finally be the day someone stops for her. Someone who sees more than just a shelter dog — someone who sees a loyal companion, a gentle soul, and a best friend ready to give unconditional love.

Cookie deserves to know what it feels like to have a warm bed, a safe home, and a family who will never leave her behind. She deserves walks filled with excitement, quiet nights curled up beside someone who loves her, and the comfort of finally belonging.

But she can’t find that home without our help.

Please consider opening your heart and giving Cookie the second chance she’s been waiting for. And if you can’t adopt, sharing her story could be the reason the right person finds her. One share, one comment, one conversation could change her life forever.
