NEW CITY, NY — An early morning house fire in New City on Sunday claimed the life of an adult woman, according to the Clarkstown Police Department.

Police said the incident occurred at approximately 9:05 a.m. on March 29, 2026, when officers responded to a report of a structure fire at a residence on Carolina Drive. Initial reports indicated that a resident might still be inside the home.

Upon arrival, officers found the single-family residence heavily engulfed in flames. The New City Fire Engine Company responded to the scene, along with multiple volunteer fire departments from across Rockland County providing mutual aid.

Firefighters faced intense fire conditions and partial structural collapse while working to contain the blaze. The fire was eventually brought under control by responding crews.

Following the extinguishment of the fire, authorities discovered an adult female victim deceased inside the home.

The Clarkstown Police Department extended its condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Clarkstown Police Department Detective Bureau. Officials said additional information will be released as it becomes available.

Ramapo Police Halt Test of Advanced License Plate Reader Cameras

Ramapo Police Chief Daniel Hyman announced that the department will not move forward with a planned test of a new generation of automated license plate reader (ALPR) cameras, citing privacy concerns and the need to balance law enforcement technology with constitutional protections.

Hyman said the technology being considered goes beyond the department’s existing fixed license plate readers. While current cameras primarily capture license plates to help identify wanted or stolen vehicles and assist with criminal investigations, the newer systems include advanced investigative analytics and vehicle-identification capabilities.

“Those capabilities can provide tremendous value to law enforcement, but they also raise legitimate questions about privacy and the appropriate limits of government technology,” Hyman said.

Hyman emphasized that the decision does not affect the traditional fixed LPR cameras currently used by the Ramapo Police Department and does not represent a rejection of license plate reader technology overall.

Instead, he said the department is exercising caution because of the expanded capabilities of the newer systems.

“Our responsibility is to protect both” public safety and constitutional protections, Hyman said.
