Tappan Firefighters Aid Old Tappan Second-Alarm Fire, Blaze Controlled in 90 Minutes

A second-alarm structure fire in Old Tappan was brought under control Tuesday morning following a coordinated response from multiple fire departments, including mutual aid from Volunteer Fire Association of Tappan.

At approximately 7:00 a.m., Tappan firefighters were initially dispatched to relocate an engine to the Old Tappan Fire Department headquarters while crews there were operating at the scene of a working fire. While en route, the assignment was upgraded by Bergen County Fire Dispatch, and Tappan’s Engine 21-1502 was redirected directly to the incident.

Upon arrival, firefighters reported to the command post and were assigned to assist crews operating at the rear of the residence. As operations progressed, Tappan personnel were later reassigned to serve as the FAST (Firefighter Assist and Search Team), a critical safety role focused on firefighter rescue.

Firefighters were able to knock down the main body of fire, and overhaul operations began shortly afterward. The incident was placed under control at approximately 8:30 a.m.

Officials credited the quick containment to a strong mutual aid response and coordinated efforts among all departments on scene.

Ramapo Police Halt Test of Advanced License Plate Reader Cameras

Ramapo Police Chief Daniel Hyman announced that the department will not move forward with a planned test of a new generation of automated license plate reader (ALPR) cameras, citing privacy concerns and the need to balance law enforcement technology with constitutional protections.

Hyman said the technology being considered goes beyond the department’s existing fixed license plate readers. While current cameras primarily capture license plates to help identify wanted or stolen vehicles and assist with criminal investigations, the newer systems include advanced investigative analytics and vehicle-identification capabilities.

“Those capabilities can provide tremendous value to law enforcement, but they also raise legitimate questions about privacy and the appropriate limits of government technology,” Hyman said.

Hyman emphasized that the decision does not affect the traditional fixed LPR cameras currently used by the Ramapo Police Department and does not represent a rejection of license plate reader technology overall.

Instead, he said the department is exercising caution because of the expanded capabilities of the newer systems.

“Our responsibility is to protect both” public safety and constitutional protections, Hyman said.
