Ice Skating At Veterans Memorial Park In The Town Of Orangetown

Published

on

It’s been great seeing so many families at Veterans Memorial Park and we are excited to see the ice skating pond open to residents for the first weekend in quite some time! For skating, Orangetown Parks and Recreation opens the larger of their two ponds, and is located next to the dog park and pickleball courts.
Please always check for green flags before skating. Green means safe for skating, red means unsafe/no skating. Ice thickness is measured daily by our staff as the weather can change.

Did You Know Rockland Had An Ice Bridge Connecting Nyack To Tarrytown

Published

on

1866 the Rockland County Journal published an article that captured the imaginations of Tarrytown and Nyack residents. They announced the “construction” of a bridge across the Tappan Zee in just 48 hours. The bridge would be so strong it could support people, sleighs, cattle and cars.

This was not an ordinary bridge, it was nature’s handiwork. An ICE bridge that spanned the 3 mile wide Tappan Zee during the winter. Sometimes it appeared every winter while other times there were decade long gaps in it’s arrival.

When the ice bridge did emerged, it became transportation and a playground for people of all ages. There were walkers, skaters, cyclists, cars, horses, and even motorcycles on its meticulously marked route across the nearly three-mile-wide Tappan Zee.

Mistakes happen. This touring car found a soft spot in the ice while trying to cross the ice bridge. Norman Burke photograph.

Dino The Tabby Cat Is Looking For A Loving Home Can It Be Your Home

Published

on

Dino, an adorable 6-month old tabby boy! His story is remarkable. He was neutered several months ago along with his two siblings, but at that time, he was not considered friendly enough to be kept for adoption and was returned to his colony. Soon after, we received a call from those caring for him in the colony that something was wrong with his rear-end. We were able to trap him again, brought him to the vet, and found out that he had a prolapsed rectum. By quickly taking care of this problem, we were able to save his life. The bonus of this happening, because we had to hold onto him for several months, is that we realized he really likes human contact and is now a sweet and adoptable kitten!!  He’s currently living in a large cage in a foster’s home, but he makes the best of it by playing with his toys and rolling over for belly rubs. He’s a curious and adorable purr-machine! Dino will be quite timid at first in his new home, but he craves love and attention and given some time, will adjust wonderfully. Dino is neutered, vaccinated and negative for FeLV and FIV. Please open your heart to this precious little boy who has been through a lot and was given a second chance to now have a forever loving home. Please call 845-634-0345. This is a landline phone, so kindly leave a message if you get a VM and your call will be returned. We are a 501(c)(3) cat rescue group in Rockland for over 29 years. Thank you!!
