Fight Outside Garnerville ShopRite Sparks Investigation After Gun Discharge

Published

The Town of Haverstraw Police Department is investigating a fight outside the ShopRite in Garnerville that resulted in an accidental gun discharge Sunday evening.

Police said officers responded to reports of a fight in progress at approximately 7:45 p.m. on May 24, 2026, in the parking lot of the ShopRite located at 56 West Ramapo Road.

Upon arrival, officers encountered two adult men on the Rosman Road side of the building. Both individuals sustained minor, non-life-threatening injuries during the altercation and were transported to local hospitals for evaluation. Authorities said both men were treated and later released.

According to the preliminary investigation, one of the men involved was an off-duty member of the New York City Police Department who was carrying a legally owned handgun at the time of the incident.

Police said that during the confrontation, the firearm was removed from the officer’s waistband, causing one round to discharge. The bullet did not strike either of the individuals involved or any bystanders.

Investigators also determined the dispute may have stemmed from allegations that the other man involved had been harassing the NYPD officer’s daughter. Authorities emphasized that the daughter and the other individual are acquaintances only and have never been involved in a domestic relationship.

The Town of Haverstraw Police Department said the investigation remains ongoing in coordination with the Rockland County District Attorney’s Office.

Anyone with information related to the incident is asked to contact the Town of Haverstraw Police Department Detective Bureau at (845) 354-1500.

According to the Volunteer Fire Association of Tappan, the incident occurred at approximately 2:15 p.m. when crews were dispatched to assist mutual aid departments operating at the scene.

Members quickly staffed Engine 21-1502 and responded to Northvale within minutes. Upon arrival, Chief Neuendorf (21-1) coordinated with fire operations to establish a communication bridge between New York and New Jersey agencies.

Officials said the main body of fire was successfully knocked down, and firefighters from multiple agencies worked together to conduct overhaul operations and locate remaining hot spots before the incident was placed under control.

Due to hot weather conditions, crews later rotated through EMS rehabilitation for hydration and medical monitoring before returning to New York.
