Ramapo Police Officer Uninjured After Vehicle Struck by Alleged Drunk Driver on Route 202

Published

on

Ramapo, N.Y. — A Ramapo Police officer narrowly avoided injury after a vehicle struck a fully marked patrol car and another vehicle on Route 202.

According to police, the officer had been stationed at the scene of a downed tree, with the patrol vehicle’s emergency lights activated, when an oncoming driver collided with both the police car and another vehicle.

Fortunately, the officer was not hurt in the crash.

During the investigation, officers determined that one of the drivers involved was allegedly intoxicated and operating without a valid license. Police said the individual was arrested for felony driving while intoxicated (DWI) and unlicensed operation, noting that the suspect has three prior convictions for similar offenses. The defendant is expected to be arraigned and proceed through the next steps of the criminal justice process.

The police vehicle was towed from the scene.

In a statement, the Ramapo Police Department emphasized that the incident highlights the daily risks faced by officers serving the community — even during seemingly routine calls such as guarding a roadway hazard.

“This incident serves as a serious reminder of the daily dangers faced by police officers while serving the public,” the department said. “It also reinforces a troubling reality — despite our ongoing efforts to enforce impaired driving laws, people are still making the decision to drive drunk.”

Police urged drivers to make responsible choices and help keep roads safe.

“Drive sober. Stay alert. And help us protect the lives of those who are protecting you,” the statement concluded.

The Suffern Police Department Detective Bureau, in partnership with the Rockland County Intelligence Center, recently conducted a proactive sweep of 35 local businesses to check for ATM and credit card skimming devices. No devices were detected.

Skimming devices are illegal tools used by criminals to capture payment card information during legitimate transactions—often without the victim’s knowledge. This stolen data can then be used to commit fraud and identity theft.

Proactive enforcement efforts like this play a critical role in safeguarding the community by preventing financial crimes before they occur and protecting both residents and local businesses. The Suffern Police Department remains committed to staying ahead of emerging threats and ensuring the continued safety and security of the community.
