STONY POINT, NY — A 43-year-old West Haverstraw man was arrested in the early morning hours of Friday, July 18, after crashing a vehicle into the property of the Stony Point Police Department while reportedly experiencing a drug-induced psychosis.

According to authorities, at approximately 12:20 AM, Abdi Diaz recklessly drove a vehicle at a high rate of speed into the parking lot of the Stony Point Police Station, veering onto the front lawn and ultimately entering a restricted area behind the building. During the chaotic incident, a female passenger leapt from the moving vehicle in an apparent attempt to escape. Fortunately, she was not injured.

Officers on duty quickly responded and were able to bring the vehicle to a stop before Diaz could exit the premises. Upon contact, officers determined that Diaz was hallucinating and exhibiting signs of a drug-induced mental health episode. He was immediately taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for evaluation.

The reckless driving caused significant damage to the police department’s front lawn, although no injuries were reported among officers or civilians.

Following his release from the hospital, Diaz was charged with:

– Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs (DWAI Drugs)

– Criminal Mischief in the 4th Degree

– Reckless Endangerment in the 2nd Degree

– Reckless Driving

He was processed and released with an appearance ticket and multiple Uniform Traffic Tickets. Diaz is scheduled to appear in Stony Point Town Court on August 5, 2025, at 9:00 AM.

Police said officers responded to the convenience store at approximately 8:45 p.m. following reports of an intoxicated and disorderly man inside the business. Upon arrival, officers recognized the suspect from previous incidents at the location and noted that he had previously been issued a trespass warning for the store.
