Fatal House Fire in West Nyack: Clarkstown PD

WEST NYACK, NY – On Tuesday March 25, 2020 at approximately 5:50 AM the Clarkstown Police Department responded to 9 Wheeler Pl. in West Nyack for a report of a house fire. As units from Clarkstown Police arrived on the scene of the single family home they observed heavy smoke and fire coming from the rear of the house which kept them from gaining access to the home. West Nyack FD made entry into the home where they located an adult female victim and extinguished the fire.

The victims identification will be released upon notification of next of kin.The fatal fire is being investigated by the Clarkstown Detective Bureau.

Gilchrest Rd will be temporarily closed beginning, Monday, April 22 to Thursday, April 25, at the railroad crossing between Stern Place and Sasson Terrace in Valley Cottage. This closure is due to construction upgrades being performed by CSX. Please follow the posted detours provided by CSX.

Recently, a resident posted this picture of a large black rat snake at Congers Lake. Town staff was sent to identify and locate it and the photo was sent to the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation experts who identified it as an extremely large native black rat snake. According to the DEC these snakes average three to five feet but can grow to as large as eight feet. It is not venomous and poses NO harm to people. It is prime season to see them as they emerge from hibernation and the temperature is still cool out. They feed on mice, voles, small birds and eggs etc.

If you see this snake or others like it just give it space, they will be slower this time of year due to weather and will pose no harm to any residents. If you see a snake like this at Congers Lake realize that is its natural habitat and please give it space.
