Town of Clarkstown Announces Germonds Pool to Open

Published

on

NEW CITY, NY— The Town of Clarkstown announced that Germonds Pool, one of the three pool facilities the Town operates, will be opened the week of July 6th for the summer season. The decision to open only one pool is due to a number of factors related to COVID-19, but chief among them was the health and safety of residents during the existing pandemic, which had already forced the closure of the Town’s youth summer camp programs earlier this month.

“COVID-19 provided us all with so many challenges this year and although the decision was a tough one to make, closing all of our pools was simply not an option. By opening Germonds Pool, we hope that our residents will be able to safely enjoy our town’s most centrally-located pool and stay cool this summer,” said Supervisor George Hoehmann.

Necessary work at the Congers Lake Memorial Park and Lake Nanuet pools were postponed during the lockdown, prohibiting outside vendors from beginning work at both facilities, leaving Germonds Pool as the town’s only option this season. Germonds Pool will open the week of July 6th.

Germonds Pool will be operated in accordance with the guidelines provided by the New York State Department of Health, which cuts the total capacity of the pool complex by 50% and limits the size of groups within the pool complex to gatherings of no more than 10, all while requiring that each person maintain a distance of at least 6 feet from other, non-family individuals. Therefore, no more than 900 people can be within the Germonds Pool complex at any given time.

In order to follow those guidelines, the following policies will be in effect:

The pool is open to residents only. No guests of residents will be admitted.
All residents must register for a Daily Pool pass at https://town.clarkstown.ny.us/town_hall/recreation_parks/community_pass_registration. The cost is $25 per swimmer and entitles each card holder the ability to pay the daily rate.
The daily rate is $6.00 for swimmers 12 and older. The daily rate for children is $5.00
The pool will be open for seniors ONLY from 8:00AM to 9:30AM.
General admission hours are 10:00AM to 7:45PM, 7 days a week.
Swimmers will be able to reserve and pay for daily admission 48 hours in advance, through the Community Pass website.

The opening of Germonds Pool also creates an opportunity for those interested in summer employment as a lifeguard, especially later in the season when there is a great need for it. Frozen Toilet During Extreme Cold? What Homeowners Should and Shouldn’t Do

Published

on

With freezing temperatures expected across Rockland County, Fire and Emergency Services is reminding residents to take steps to prevent frozen and burst pipes, which can cause significant property damage and even lead to fires.

Officials recommend allowing faucets to drip slightly, especially overnight, to keep water moving through pipes. Residents should also open cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate around plumbing, particularly in kitchens and bathrooms.

Fire and Emergency Services advises keeping homes heated to at least 55 degrees, even when away, and insulating exposed pipes in basements, crawl spaces, and garages. Residents are warned never to use open flames or unsafe heating devices to thaw frozen pipes.

If a pipe does freeze, officials recommend using a hair dryer or warm air to thaw it safely. Torches or other open-flame methods should never be used. A frozen toilet is inconvenient, but rushing the fix can turn a minor problem into major damage. Slow, careful warming is the safest solution, and professional help should be sought if the issue persists.

In the event of a burst pipe or water emergency, residents are urged to shut off the water immediately and contact emergency services or a licensed professional if needed.

Officials remind residents to stay warm, stay safe, and take preventative steps to protect their homes during extreme cold weather.
